10 minutes. That’s how long we had known each other before I started pressing the shutter. Contrary to every other trash-the-dress session I had shot previously, I did not shoot the wedding for this couple. You see, a few weeks ago I got a call from a friend. He told me his friends got married a few months ago and their original photographer hadn’t been able to take bride and groom portraits on the wedding day. They were pretty bummed and mentioned it to him as they were thinking of having a friend take a few snapshots of the two of them. So a little light went off in his head and he decided that as a wedding gift to them he would book me for their session.
As soon as I talked to Ainara on the phone days later I knew that we would get along perfectly. Not only is she fun, kind, and spontaneous, but she even spent a year living in Santa Barbara. Ahh! I have a soft spot for California. So we talked on the phone for a bit, got excited about photos, and decided on shooting all over San Sebastian. It was a windy day and there was some light rain here and there, but it held out for most of the day and the shoot went by beautifully. (Special thanks to my assistant Ana for letting me borrow some clothes after I ended up laying down on the wet sand in the rain… and had an hour and a half commute back home.)
Ainara and Juan were naturals in front of the camera. Not even kidding, I gave them the lightest instruction and they just rocked it out. Laughing, dancing, and killing me with how head-over-heels they are for each other. We shot way past the time limit and all the way until the sky was pitch black. They even braved the weather and went for a little splash at the beach! What a fun day and beautiful couple.
I couldn’t ask for more.
